Goodbye, Roger: Happy retirement to our colleague Roger Smith

Our fantastic colleague Roger Smith is retiring on Friday 26 July and leaving Cancer Research Wales after 13 years with the charity

As our Driver and Facilities Co-ordinator, Roger has been an invaluable member of the Cancer Research Wales family over the years.

“I have lots of happy memories of Cancer Research Wales, but the happiest one is being selected to go on the China trek and visiting the Great Wall of China, which was an amazing experience,” said Roger.

“I have also had lots of fun while working at Cancer Research Wales. I remember once getting marooned in a field in Carmarthen after an event with the Research team, which still makes me laugh today. I’m going to miss my colleagues and the amazing volunteers here who have become my good friends,” added Roger.

Known for his patience, kind nature, can-do attitude and sense of humour, Roger is a very popular colleague among the team here at Cancer Research Wales.

He has played a vital role in the smooth running of our logistics including managing and transporting of our donated stock and merchandise.

An expert with an Allen key and flat pack furniture, Roger has also helped with the opening of our shops and been responsible for managing our maintenance and repair services and overseeing security and health and safety.

Ian Davies volunteers for Cancer Research Wales on our collection van and knows Roger well said:

“Roger is fantastic, he is a pleasure to work with and he treats me with respect when I’m on the van. One time, when we were opening the Llandudno shop he came to Caerphilly and picked me up in the van early in the morning at roughly 5.40am and he thanked me for that. I will miss him very much. I’ve got lots of happy memories of Roger and have been working with him a long time.”

Lorraine Boyd, Head of Retail at Cancer Research Wales said:

“I’m sure I speak for everyone at Cancer Research Wales when I say that it’s been an absolute privilege to work with Roger. He’s leaving big shoes to fill, and we will all miss him, but I want to wish Roger a very happy retirement from all his friends at Cancer Research Wales.”
